Arlo Robbins: Extra-Somatic Identity Guide
“Extra-somatic identity” is a phrase I created to describe the parts of myself that live beyond my physical form: the garments I wear, the objects I carry, the tools I use, etc. They aren’t reflections of me — they’re organelles of a larger system that supports how I think, feel, and act.
This zine is an attempt to document a system I’ve slowly built around myself, hubristically organizing the messy abstraction of personhood through layers, materials, and tools that all feel like extensions of me.
I’ve always been a conflicted child of both abstract chaos and structured systems. My ideas are big and tangled, and I’ve often struggled to write them down in a way that feels clear. I decided that if I wanted to tackle more complex systems, I would start with the one that is the most familiar to me: myself.
This Guide is your invitation to think about the systems you’ve built around yourself, consciously or not. I hope that by showing you mine, it might help you start noticing yours.

Sourcery Inspiration Deck
Sourcery is a deck of cards made for when you forget how to put pen to paper. When the same three ideas have been rattling around your head for the past six hours, it can feel like your creativity is all used up. However, you might just need a concept so left-field that it shakes off your arrested process. This inspiration deck provides easily-accessible randomized sources, and prompts you to look closer at your findings’ elements and shapes. The final card tells you a way to reinterpret this element and transform it into something new. This process is meant to give your process a random external influence to bounce off of when coming up with design ideas, to escape from the echo chamber of your own mind.
